Picture this, you’ve just finished watching a movie showing you a fantastic and beautiful place you would love to live in someday. When the movie is finished, you come back to reality to your cramped studio apartment with dishes in the sink and say, “I’ll never get there.” That is your mindset. As a coach, I would ask you, “What made you say, ‘I’ll never get there’? Why didn’t you ask yourself, ‘HOW can I get there?’ Instead?”
Without even realizing it, we have shaped our minds around our environment. We compare ourselves to others, we talk down to ourselves and sometimes we feel joy to see others not succeed because we haven’t succeeded in anything either. Misery loves company, as they say. Let’s change our mindset so that the next time we see something we want we ask, “How can I do it?” because it is possible. It may not happen quickly but where there is a will, there is a way.
Let’s start from the base of our mindset: our social-emotional learning. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is defined as a developmental process that helps people learn skills to manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. They directly influence how individuals perceive challenges, setbacks, and their own abilities, which are fundamental aspects of managing emotions and interacting with others effectively; a prominent example is the "growth mindset" which is often integrated into SEL frameworks.
Here are the most common Mindsets:
1. Growth mindset
2. Fixed mindset
3. Abundance mindset
4. Positive mindset
5. Scarcity mindset
6. Entrepreneurial mindset
7. Productive
8. Confident mindset
9. Gratitude mindset
10. Lazy mindset
11. Leader Mindset
12. Learning mindset
13. Social mindset
14. Analytical mindset
15. Challenge mindset
16. Closed mindset
17. Control mindset
18. Creative mindset
19. Follower mindset
When you have had the time to learn how your mind works, you will be able to understand all of these mindsets. This is a lifetime activity of self-reflection. Know where your mental state is at. Let say you are a professional Baker. I will illustrate an example of the same situation using 2 different mindsets.
-Mindset 1-
You are a baker and just won the bake-off championship tournament after months of difficult practice and needing to troubleshoot 20% of technical customer complaints. Your current mindset after this win could be entrepreneurial, confident, positive and productive. If you are carrying that mindset into the next time you have a business problem, you will approach it with the mindset of “I’ve got this.” The next quarterly review shows positive results and an increase in customer satisfaction at your bakery. You have an added confidence boost in your business ethics and you are proud of how far you have come and thankful for the challenges.
-Mindset 2-
You are a baker and just won the bake-off championship tournament after months of difficult practice and needing to troubleshoot technical customer complaints. Being the victor of the event is so-so to you because there are 20% of customer complaints is weighing heavily on your mind. This now has you in a scarcity, analytical, challenge or fear mindset. You could feel as if you have a lack of control as well. Your confidence is lower than before and you are now obsessed with getting your reviews up. You are making decisions from an emotionally charged, unbalanced, point of view.
If we could think of our own personal situations as we can this baker, which mindset do you think is best to have for our future mental health and growth, 1 or 2? Which mindset do you think is a good mindset to maintain a healthy balance? Many of us are in the mindset of Baker #2 due to our upbringing, medical background and current environment but we don’t have to stay in that mindset. Easier said than done, Baker #1 is what we can grow into being through self-awareness and practice.
The 7 Mindsets Program is a learning curriculum program designed to provide mindset-based and mental health learning solutions. I don’t have any affiliation with this company but I found their 7 mindset mini guide something positive to use in our practice exercise today. Let’s practice getting into a positive and productive mindset with these 7 mindset affirmations. Chose any one of them and say it every day, write it on a sticky note on the fridge, or however you want to remind yourself! Practice saying it as many times to yourself, doing what you say you will do and believing what you say you can do. Even if you have a bad meeting or a bad day, say it to yourself! Show up for YOU in those times too. You are important for you.
Example Mindset Shift Mantra for Today:
“Everything is possible. I will be able to buy a simple cottage in the countryside of Italy.”
